Photography: Skills For the Future

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008
by Fabian Toulouse

Most people think that photography was not invented until the mid-1800s, and in a sense, they are right, but many discoveries that made 21st photography possible came far earlier. The first camera created, in fact, was a pinhole camera made by Ibn al Haytham (965-1040). The vital discovery of silver nitrate by Albertus Magnus happened in the 13th century, followed later by silver chloride. In 1694, the photochemical effect of light on chemicals was earliest described by Wilhelm Homberg.

All of these contributions led to the development of photography in the 19th century. In 1826, the very first enduring photograph was made by Nicephore Niepce. Just in time for soldiers going off to the American Civil War, commercial photography was in its infancy. All the boys going off to fight wanted to leave behind a tiny tintype or ambrotype for his family or special girl. Though there are only very rare action photographs from the war, the Civil War has the illustrious distinction of being our first conflict with a photographic record.

As photography progressed, more careers opened up, and it also became a hobby for thousands of curious folks worldwide. Newspapers needed photographers, magazines were created to showcase photography, photographers were always in demand for family portraits. Now there are any number of careers for photographers, from crime scene investigation work to sports to work in NASA or other scientific arenas. Photographers cover the globe capturing every facet of human culture as well as animal and plant life. They witness natural beauty at which the rest of us can only sit home and marvel.

Anyone with an interest, however, can practice photography for themselves, today. With distance education courses, education is fun and convenient. The coursework can teach you all aspects of the field, whether you use a digital or 35 mm camera.

You do not even have to be thinking about a career, you can simply pick courses that will help you take great pictures of your kids or photograph the spider webs that cover your garden in the morning light. Whatever your interest, photography is a useful thing to learn.

English Lessons: How to Diagram a Sentence

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008
by Amy Nutt

The structure of a sentence is very important when trying to learn english because words in different sequences can mean different things, although the words are the same. That is why it is important to place each part of the sentence in the correct place so that what you are trying to say is not perceived to be something else. If you have ever received instructions from someone and followed them just as they said them and then they come back to you later and tell you that you did not follow their directions, this can be quite confusing. And no matter what you tell that person, they are not going to believe that they were not clear because they knew what it was they were trying to tell you. It is important to look out for this, but it is also important that you know how to send your own messages, whether it is in writing or speaking.

The sentence

There are several parts to a sentence such as the subject, the verb, and what we call modifiers. Let’s just say you’re given the simple sentence, “People should laugh.” The word should is called a modal auxiliary verb. This means that you are going to draw a straight line and write the sentence on the line. You are then going to draw a vertical line between people and should. Since should is a modal auxiliary verb, it is categorized with the verb “laugh.” What this diagram does is separate the subject from the verb.

Now let us expand the sentence to “Some people should laugh.” This can make it a little trickier because you have an additional word at the beginning that is not the subject, but you still have your subject and your verb present. So what you are going to do is keep your vertical line with the sentence written on the line and the line drawn between the words people and should. You are then going to draw a slanted line connecting to the horizontal line the sentence is written on to the left of the word people, but it will slanting downward like a sliding board. This is where you’re going to write the word some because it is an adjective. Since it modifies the word people, it is considered a modifier and modifiers go on the slanted line.

Another example

To get a little more complicated, the sentence “The smartest people will be laughing,” is a good one to diagram. Of course you know the subject and the noun in the sentence is the word people, the adjective is the word smartest, and the verb is laughing. However, this sentence is in the future tense because the people are not currently laughing, but they will be laughing.

So you’re going to draw your horizontal line and write “people will be laughing” just like you did in the first example. You will draw your vertical line between the words people and will. The word the is called a definite article and it will be written on a slanted line to the left of the word people. The word smartest is an adjective and it is also written on a slanted line, but it is done so at the right of the word people.

These two examples are the basics of diagramming a sentence. Of course sentences get more complicated and require more slants and lines. A good example is a predicate nominative, which is a noun that follows a linking verb such as the word is. This means a slant to the left at the top of the horizontal line will be present between the word is and the noun. These are great things to know and will help you to learn english effectively.

by Fabian Toulouse

The pressure on today’s youngsters to succeed in school is phenomenal. Not only is the pressure on youngsters, but it is on teachers and administrators as well. Sometimes, the in-school environment can suffer from tension and pressure that makes the learning experience painful. Gone are the days of long recesses on inviting days and long lunch hours with time to chat with friends. Kids are moved speedily from one activity or subject to another, trying to shovel into the students’ heads enough information to see them through the vital year end tests.

For some children, the stress manifests itself in stress-related illness and suffering school performance. For those children, it may be time to let the games begin! Educational software for kids makes learning fun instead of a like a cattle drive. Learning games can help a child who is left behind by the speedier pace of his classmates catch up.

Kids who are bored with a certain lesson, like math or reading, can find it significantly more fun when it is presented to them in the form of a game. Kids who hate doing homework and refuse to put in the time necessary to memorize such things as the multiplication tables or addition facts may have to be pulled away from math games teaching the same skills.

Teachers and parents alike can profit from educational software. Using video games is a smart way to capitalize on something today’s children naturally love. The game format is familiar; they are passionate about the challenge of trying to beat level after level. And with educational games, the more levels they win, the more they learn! There are games for several of the courses for which they are responsible in school, as well as games that zero in on a particular areas of interest a child might have.

Learning should not be painful to a child. In fact, a lifelong love of learning is one of the most valuable gifts you could ever give your child. Foster that curiosity and watch your child succeed.

Increasing Popularity of Distance Educational Universities

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008
by Casey Myers

The proliferation of high-speed internet connections has established distance education a feasible option to traditional colleges. More agrestic districts apply video conferencing than urbanized or suburban districts, which rely heavily on the Internet. Indeed, students at the college and university level also rely entirely on the Internet.

A growing minority of distance education pupils are working professionals, individuals who work by day and go to classes at night, often only two or three times a week. The ease of internet education is very attractive to these students as they can successful juggle work, friends, and coursework. Many well-respected institutions offer degree levels including associate, bachelor, and masters degrees. Indeed, the majority of these institutions offer vocational and trades coursework also.

The Department of Education believes online and distant learning courses will more than double before 2020. The need to maintain expensive overhead, like campuses and cleaning maids, would become unnecessary, allowing funds to be transferred to the class and coursework level. The concern, as always, is the quality of the work. Distance students are encouraged to develop fruitful communications with other classmates, tutors, and teachers. Ms. Patrick said assessing the quality of instruction and coursework could be easier with electronic courses as many factors can be tracked, including the number of times students and teachers interact.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles: Go Green

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
by Bruce Campbell

It is very important that scientists begin work on more efficient automobiles that take advantage of alternative fuels because most of the resources on the planet are of a limited nature and fuel consumption remains as high as ever. Fuel prices are skyrocketing and if current trends continue then soon a day will arrive in which there is no more oil.

Auto makers throughout the globe have begun to make hybrid cars that do not use gas or diesel fuel. Several years ago, we witnessed the debut of electric autos too. There is an ever increasing awareness that we must conserve energy. Numerous nations are considering the substitution of hybrid vehicles in place of their current gas or diesel fueled cars and vans.

Vehicles that utilize alternate fuels are becoming popular worldwide. Almost everyone has added them to their “priority list” – celebrities, businessmen and women, environmentalists, etc. Bio-diesel is one alternative fuel that is being used to run cars as well as larger vehicles. These alternative fuels have many advantages over old fuel types such as petrol and diesel.

Green cars (the name given to those cars which run on electricity, solar cells or bio-diesel) are being manufactured by top notch automobile companies all over the world. Considering their positive effects on the environment, they surely are here to stay. Research has proven that energy alternative fuel vehicles consume less fuel and give better mileage in comparison to the automobiles which run on gasoline or diesel.

It is true that energy alternative fuel vehicles are a little expensive at present, but as more and more people start purchasing such vehicles, their prices will definitely come down. There are many respiratory diseases which are the direct result of air-pollution. Automobile exhausts contain harmful gases which can cause allergies, respiratory infections as well as many other diseases.

Alternative fuel vehicles are totally free of pollution, though. After all, there is no harm done to the environment by vehicles that do not burn petrol or diesel. Citizens of many countries are embracing automobiles that run on solar power, and car companies are looking into the production of an increasing number of vehicles that can run on the renewable energy sources that are discussed here.

Learn How To Draw By Sharpening Your Observation Skills

Saturday, May 10th, 2008
by Michael Dale

Can it be true when someone says that they can’t draw?

The fact is that people draw every day… they just don’t know they are drawing.

The basic function of drawing is to make marks onto a surface to communicate ideas and information. Making marks is usually done with pictures and writing.

“You can draw if you can write”

The same skills are used in writing and drawing.

When you write you don’t think about what it is you are doing…

* You are forming lines

* You are drawing circles

* You are creating curves

It is easy for you to write. Writing comes naturally to you. You were taught to write from an early age. The skills come easily to you.

The same skills are used for drawing that you use when you write…

* You can use a series of lines to draw a house

* You use a combination of curves to draw a face

If you take time and are willing to put in the effort, you can learn to draw… there is nothing to stop you improving your drawing skills.

Take a pen or pencil and challenge yourself to draw a cat or a dog. Don’t be too concerned if the result isn’t too good. Your drawing could appear very different from what you would expect.

Because you already think that you can’t draw there is no surprise.

However, it could surprise you to learn that many artists would struggle to get an exact likeness.

When you learn to draw, the real challenge is to improve your observation skills.

As you look more closely at the cat and dog you will see more. Take a close look at the head…

* See the shape of the head

* See how the ears are placed on top

* See the eyes

* Look at the nose

Very soon you will see a clearer picture in your mind…

“Now, draw your dog or cat once more and you will see a vast improvement”
