The Hebrides Isles And Self Catering On The Isle Of Harris

Saturday, May 24th, 2008
by Donald Macdonald

Have you ever pictured yourself sunbathing on a picturesque coast on a distant isle reflecting upon the meaning of life? As the rest of society bowl along their every day business you will simply lay out and chill out. The Outer Hebrides/Western Isles of Scotland are an archipelago of such isles and islets with marvelous countryside and picturesque beaches. Possibly the prettiest of areas is Harris.

If you are considering having a holiday in the Western Isles why not think about visiting the Isle of Harris. You will discover that there is loads of Accommodation in Harris available throughout spring and summer and one of the best ways to stay is in self catering accommodation. Hiring a self catering cottage in close proximity to a beach is incredibly easy, today you simply get yourself onto the world wide web and visit Google to search for it. Regrettably it is usual for some cottages to be booked up to a year by previous tourists to the island. Therefore it is immensely important that you book your property as soon as you can, waiting for too long could cause you to miss out.

Isle of Harris Self Catering Accommodation is truly brilliant the cottage is always impeccable and highly pleasant whichever Harris Self Catering Accommodation you decide upon. While visiting Harris in the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides you should think about a excursion to Lewis (isle of) where you will find a number of incredibly popular places of interest and landmarks such as the beautiful and incredibly important Calanais(Callanish) stone circle. The Calanais(Callanish) stone circle are amongst the most important and remarkable in Europe.

About 1km down the road from the Callanish standing stones is Dun Carloway Broch which is an ancient iron age dual-walled drystone structure of which the purpose is unknown (but a large number of people consider it was defensive). All across the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles you will find an enormous number of areas of special interest. It would seem that around every corner there appears an outline of rocks where at some time in the past there was some kind building. These were at some time in the past a type of building known as a blackhouse.

These days there are hardly any blackhouses in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. There are a small number that have been renovated and a couple that have been fully renovated and modernized and available as rental accommodation. Happily there is a blackhouse available as Isle of Harris Accommodation at Scarista on South Harris. This astounding cottage-like building is extremely close to one of the most picturesque beaches on the whole of Harris (and the Isle of Harris is renowned for having some of the most incredible beaches in Europe.

What To See In New York In Seven Days

Friday, May 23rd, 2008
by JW Raymond

If you are fortunate enough to have seven days in New York City, you will find this just enough time to see the most popular visitor attractions. Most people will agree that a trip here would not be complete without seeing the world famous empire State Building especially from the top. Some people swear that it is better to visit the top floor of the Rockefeller Center but you really do need a clear day to fully appreciate the view. Possibly equal to The State Building is The Statue of Liberty but owing to delays with the ferry trips it might be worth viewing this ‘beautiful lady’ (and an inspiration to many) from Ellis Island.

As an alternative why not go to Staten Island via the free ferry and look at the Statue of Liberty from there; it is also worth walking around the terminal as well as there are many excellent street performers there. Without going to the site of where the World Trade Center Towers used to be no seven day visit to New York would feel right. It’s strangely moving location and the terrorist struck World Trade Centre site covers a huge area but it is a peculiarly unfriendly subject for the photographer. An emotionally lighter attraction is to visit some of the famous stores like Tiffany’s or the Lower East side area where there are numerous bargain warehouses to look around.

Bloomingdales is another famous store (for the wealthy) to look around but it is Maceys, who will give 11 percent discount on production of a tourist card where most people will head for. At the time of writing the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was closed for refurbishment but should be open by the fall of 2008; once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. Many special (and large) craft are located here including a number from World War II, namely the aircraft carrier the USS Intrepid. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep; because it’s about New York’s finest (and some not so fine), it has some really excellent NYPD souvenirs.

Side Tenement Museum which captures the lives of immigrants to New York back in 1864 If you visit Central Park (and why wouldn’t you?) you can call into the Museum of New York City which has some excellent exhibitions about the past, present and future of the city. The museum is in a beautiful building which is free to enter but a nine dollar donation is normally given with plenty of souvenirs available.

There is a huge amount to see and do in this city and if you are staying anything less than seven days in New York, you will hardly scratch the surface!

The Archaeological Museum is located in Heraklion, very close to the Palace of Knossos.

One of the largest castles on Crete is to be found in Rethymno, which is also home to an annual Wine Festival in July; other intersting festivals are held in the town as well. If you’re interested in attending the Wine Festival however. be sure to book ahead; it can be hard to find lodging during this very popular event.

The village of Loutro has become a very popular spot for tourists of Crete to visit. The historical village can be a fun afternoon activity of walking around and enjoying the local shops and sights, or it can be an exclusive resort spa to spend several days relaxing and enjoying life to the fullest. These are just a sampling of the many places, historical sites, villages and activities that Crete has to offer.

Last, and smallest, but certainly not least is the town of Sitia. The eastern part of town, along the waterfront is the Kazarma, a fortress once occupied by the Venetians. The E75 runs by Sitia, making it an easy destination to get to.

So, if you are planning a Crete holiday, make sure to include these cities on your list of places to see. They each hold many historical sites and cultural attractions that will make your visit to Crete unforgettable. Take advantage of your holiday in Crete and submerse yourself in this unique island.

Experience luxury, and comfort with a boutique hotel

Monday, May 19th, 2008
by Samantha Upbridge

When people go on vacation or business trip, they use brand name hotels like the Comfort Inn or the Holiday Inn. While these hotels are good for getting a decent night’s sleep, they do not offer much more than that comfortable bed. Yet, there is an alternative if you’re looking for something a little more than a bed.

Well what is so different about a boutique hotel i hear you ask. Well for startets there is a greater emphasis on individual service. The idea is too make your stay a personal experience. You get the hospitality of home, and the luxury of a big name hotel.

Boutique hotels can be found anywhere in the world including the United States of America. Although this is the case, many people are not as aware of them. Why? When you turn on your television, you see commercials about families staying at a particular hotel as they travel the US. Although they can be built from new, you will find historic buildings housing a lot of boutiques.

If you want to stay in a place that is unique, you’ll need to do some searching using the Internet. You may not realize it but many of the antique homes that are fixed up in New Orleans are actually boutique hotels. There are several of them to choose from and many use the 19th century as their theme. These older homes in New Orleans can be used for something more than museums when accented right.

Themes and local culture, artwork and handicrafts play a big impact on a boutique’s decor. This adds a touch of originality and that chain hotels fail to match. This individuality makes them stand out from the chains. If you have ever wondered why all your previous experience at standard hotels have the same resonance, now you know.

The Hotel Union Square in San Francisco bases it’s theme on the Prohibition era. Its rooms and hallways are decorated with black granite and cream travertine tile. Over in Chicago, The Whitehall Hotel is based on the 1920s. You actually feel as if you’re having an experience at these hotels, rather than just switching off.

Other hotels like the owners of the Anasazi Hotel in Santa Fe use its Native American surroundings to decorate the rooms and hallway. Much of it is decorated with some kind of handmade throw rugs and pottery. The Inn of Five Graces, also located in Santa Fe, uses the southwest culture and blends it with the Asian culture.

Giving the enormous range of boutique hotels, and locations, do some research on the web if you plan to visit. Booking all the major cities should be carried out a couple of months in advance. Some boutique hotels are limited in space, from 10-100 rooms. Get your reservation in early to avoid disappointment. Read a few user reviews on the hotel you like before you book.

While mainstream hotels offer plenty of extras, boutique hotels provide more. Even though most buildings are old, they are retrofitted for modern conveniences such as high speed Internet access, spas, swimming pools and even a fitness center. Boutique hotels, larger ones especially, will offer guests a bar and restaurant inside to enjoy.

Do you want something more on your vacation? Then don’t worry about the money try a boutique hotel and see what you are missing.

Tips For Business Travelers

Thursday, May 15th, 2008
by Kay Brown

Clients like to meet their suppliers in person so an increase in travel has been the result; even the smallest company can have customers anywhere in the world now. Business travel can be quite stressful, especially if you are new to working on the move. Whilst the following business travel tips cannot help reduce traveling, they can help with some useful information to make these trips more bearable.

Sometimes for instance, baggage goes missing; that is an unfortunate fact of travel and whilst it is distressing enough on a family holiday, on a business trip it can be disastrous. To reduce the chance of a wasted journey, always carry anything that is relevant to your trip in your hand luggage.

This means that even if your main luggage is lost your trip does not have to be wasted; your meeting can still take place despite any inconvenience that has been caused. When you do pack the main luggage, the clothes you won’t be carrying on as hand luggage, make sure to pack only what you need for this trip.

In order to accomplish this, make do with a pair of casual shoes and a pair of business shoes only, and be sure to only bring enough work clothes to last you through the trip. The remaining items to pack will be toilet essentials and any other work related documents that aren’t important.

A good way to save space in your suit cases is to utilise smaller bags. Try rolling up your clothing instead of folding, as this takes up less room in your luggage and helps prevents creasing. Also, if you will pack and wear darker clothing, this will help in case something is spilt on them. This you will appreciate in case you have a last minute meeting to go to and have no time to launder clothing.

Of course if you are working to a tight schedule and the inevitable delay happens then you want to know you can attend a meeting at a moments notice and the way to freshen up is by using those hand and face wipes that come in travel packs. Remember before you leave to charge up your cell phone and other electronic devices; look into buying some form of mobile or wireless internet access package so that you can work on the move.

There is nothing worse than sitting in a hotel room at night working when you could be out exploring the city you are in so make use of the flight time and try to get important preparation work done then. By following these few quick and handy tips you should find that you will not be on the back foot and no matter what happens during your travel on business, you should have a successful trip.

If you are able to mix a little personal relaxation time with your work you should enjoy your business travel and you will probably be more productive so the business travel tips highlighted here will be more worth while.
