What are good meds that treat anxiety and not depression?

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

I have VERY bad anxiety. To a point where going out of the house is IMPOSSIBLE. I have to self talk myself before I go out if that doesn't work I leave it in the hands of God. If I am depressed I am only depressed because I can't control my anxiety. What is a good drug that treats anxiety and not depression?Ativan and xanax are antianxiolytics, but are extremely addictive. They work very well to quell anxiety but you build a tolerance that requires a higher dose in a very short period of time. Any good doctor will only prescribe these meds for short term use and will suggest you get some counselling help to learn how to control your anxiety. Long term that's your best bet.it seems if you are self talking already, that's a start. The antidepressant paxil is good for social anxiety and might be what you need. It's not addictive and I've seen it make a huge difference in a few of my friends lives who were becoming rather reclusive because of post menopausal anxiety. Best of luck to you.

What Do ADD, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression & Schizophrenia Have in Common?

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

(PRWEB) August 13, 2005

QNIA, Queensland Nutraceutical Industry Association, is a non-profit organisation based on the Gold Coast, Australia. QNIA, (http://www.qnia.com.au) provides education, networking and opportunities for business growth for its members. SAFE Analytical Laboratories is a member of QNIA and bring you this latest news:

What Do ADD, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression & Schizophrenia Have in Common?

Glad you asked.. Well they and many more mental disorders including aggressive and/or violent behaviours may all be due to imbalances in brain chemistry. In many cases these disorders can be diagnosed and rectified by nutrition and supplementation thus reducing (and in some cases replacing) the requirement for psychotropic medication, which means adverse side effects from prescription medication can be reduced.

In early 2003 SAFE Analytical Laboratories was approached to set up a method for measuring Kryptopyrrole concentrations in urine of patients suffering from various mental disorders. The urinary kryptopyrrole test now forms part of an array of tests used by doctors for the diagnosis of behavioural disorders from samples of blood, hair, & urine in accordance with the Pfeiffer Treatment Centre Protocol*.

Dr Richard Stuckey of the Border Medical Clinic (Coolangatta) was the first general practitioner in Australia to use this service, and initially began treating a small select group of patients with appropriate symptoms. The success of the initial trial was so promising that in April 2005, a further 8 doctors from Sydney, Adelaide, and New Zealand were trained in the use of this protocol.

SAFE Analytical Laboratories Pty Ltd. was opened in 2000 to specifically perform hair analysis (40 essential, non-essential, & toxic elements), and has since expanded to offer water testing as well as soil (nutrition) and plant tissue mineral testing, and more recently urine testing. There is a variety of analytical equipment available including Inductively Coupled Plasma AES, UV-Visible-NIR, Selective Ion electrodes, Gas Chromatography, and High Performance Liquid Chromatography equipment. We can test according to requirement and with this we offer a custom analytical consultation service.

How can I overcome my fear of presenting in front of a college class with 200 people?

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

I'm absolutely terrified of public speaking. I'm usually the very timid and quiet girl, so giving presentations in high school was very difficult for me. As soon as I thought that phase was over, I realized that I had to make numerous presentations in college (this is my first year of college). The presentation I am mostly fearing is in my Psychology 101 class. Our professor requires us to participate in a debate in class. Sounds fine? It's not for me I have over 200 people in my class How can I overcome this constant, consumming fear? It's very anxiety-producing and it's giving me a great deal of stress. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :) I've never done any debating, but I've done a fair number of presentations. I was abysmal when I first got started, but eventually I got the hang of it.Practice and preparation are the key. Rehearse, out loud, a dozen times or more so that your scripts fall easily from your lips. For a debate, you may want to prepare some scripted responses for common arguments that you expect, and some scripted statements that state your side's main points. Try to pick topics you know a lot about and actually care about, if possible. If you can, do a few rehearsals in front of a live audience. Practice your speeches in front of a few friends with whom you are normally comfortable speaking one on one. Always rehearse in a setting that simulates your venue as closely as possible. If you will have access to a podium, then practice speaking next to a podium. If you can access the classroom after hours, do a couple of your dry runs in that actual location. If you are going to use audio visual or other equipment, practice with it so you know it well.Rehearsal is the key You might also read I Can See You Naked, it's a handy book of presentation tips. There are others along the same lines in most libraries. One of that book's recommendations is to find a friendly, supportive, enthusiastic person in the audience, and make them your anchor point. Open up, speaking to that person, then scan out, making eye contact with others in the audience, but return to that anchor from time to time to be re-energized. If you have time, or expect to do much public speaking in your career, Toast Masters has done wonders for developing many people's public speaking skills.Good luck I used to be very quiet and am still somewhat introverted. Most would have described me as shy. I barely passed my 8th grade speech class. Took another class in my sophomore year of college, and barely passed (but the last two presentations were solid). Then I had to do a series of presentations while working on my Master's degree, and the prior practice and training allowed me to do very well in each of them, and I have done quite well in professional settings since that time, even though I don't always have time to prep. Once you get the hang of it, and build some confidence, it gets a lot easier Good luck

How can I overcome social anxiety?

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

I'm a college senior and I'm troubled by social anxiety. I am forced to participate in class by raising my hand and I'm so afraid to b/c of embarrassment if I get the answer wrong and totally off or that I won't come off good by asking a question. I'm afraid to tell any of my professers about my social anxiety. What can I do to overcome this?Yeah as stated above I would mention something to your teachers they are there to help. I was the same way in high school and college. It would ruin my whole day to think I would get called on in class my face would turn bright red, I would start sweating, and just freak out and start stuttering.sound familiar?Your in fear of being in fear and it took me along time to understand this, it wasn't until I took a psychology in college and was reading about social anxiety did I understand that's exactly what I had it was like I was reading my life word for word.I went on medication for awhile it just made me a different person and therapy didn't do much for me either I would suggest you try some of the programs available today they show you techniques to stop your fear It sucks having social anxiety I know how you feel I nearly quit school because of it, but the sooner you resolve the issue the better your life will be, take it from someone who has been in your shoes before you have the power to overcome your fear. Hope this helps, take care.

Probiotic Formula Alleviates Signs of Stress and Anxiety

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Montreal (PRWEB) November 17, 2010

A study just published by the British Journal of Nutrition found Institut Rosell-Lallemand's probiotic formula Probio'Stick (a combination of Lactobacillus Rosell-52 and Bifidobacterium Rosell-175) significantly reduces psychological distress in volunteers, in a double-blind randomized study.

These results are supported by a pre-clinical behavioral study also described in the same publication, demonstrating the anxiolytic-like effect of Probio'Stick in rats. In a previous randomized study, Probio'Stick was shown as the first probiotic preparation to efficiently reduce stress-induced gastrointestinal symptoms in chronic stress sufferers.

The clinical study, supervised by the team of Drs Messaoudi and Bisson in Nancy (France), assessed the effect of the administration of Probio'Stick for a period of one month on anxiety, depression, stress and coping strategies in healthy human volunteers. The study involved 55 healthy, stressed subjects that had undergone a range of psychological self-assessment tests and a biomarker for stress and anxiety (24 hour urinary free cortisol monitoring).

The authors of the new Probio'Stick studies concluded:
Consumption of Probio'Stick mitigated psychological distress in three tests without displaying any adverse event. These results provide further evidence that gut microflora plays a role in stress, anxiety, and depression, perhaps via the enteric nervous system as well as centrally. Subject to the confirmation of these results, probiotics might offer a useful novel therapeutic approach to neuropathologic disorders and/or as adjunct therapies in psychiatric disorders.

Study Details
The randomized study showed that daily administration of Probio'Stick preparation for one month (equivalent to 3X109 CFU/day) had a beneficial effect on general signs of anxiety and depression (in particular the somatisation, depression and anger-hostility components, as shown by Hopkins Symptom Checklist-90 test).

The probiotic also improved the subject's ability to cope with the stress of everyday events (Coping Checklists test). Results of the self-assessment tests were correlated by a decrease of urinary free cortisol levels in the probiotic treated group, a biomarker for stress and anxiety. The investigators reported that it was the first time that free cortisol level was monitored during a probiotic study.

The pre-clinical study described in the same publication was based on a rat model of anxiety which is commonly used to screen anxiolytic agents. After two weeks of treatment, Probio'Stick showed a significant anti-anxiety effect, comparable to the effect of Diazepan which was used as a positive control.

Are there any sort of vitamins that help reduce stress/anxiety?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

I am having a lot of trouble with stress, depression and anxiety. Before getting put on wacko drugs, I want to try to cure myself with Earth's natural herbs and remedies. Does anyone have any suggestions?Thank you for your timeSt. Johns Wort, Passionflower, are excellent herbs for depression, stress and anxiety. Certain tissue salts are also extremely effective as homeopathic brain and nerve tonics. They include natrium sulphate and kalium Phosphate. It is known that our body rapidly uses up reserves of vitamin C when under stress. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, blackcurrant, vegetables (broccoli, potatoes), red capsicums and chillies, strawberry, kiwifruit, rockmelon, orange juice and cranberry juice.Vitamin B6 is believed to work in the brain similar to valium-like drugs – hence its importance in your diet as food or as supplement. Good dietary sources of vitamin B6 are chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, shrimp, beef liver, lentils, soybeans, nuts, avocados, bananas, carrots, brown rice, bran, pulses, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, and whole-grain flour.Avoid common food allergens are dairy, soy, citrus, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, wheat, fish, eggs, corn, food colorings, and additives. For some intriquing takes on depression and anxiety, visit

Childhood Obesity — Four Causes are Identified and Explained

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Ashville, North Carolina (PRWEB) September 28, 2008

In the inaugural newsletter for Sixty Second Parent, leading US Pediatric expert Dr Robert P. Schwartz, MD, Wake Forest University School of Medicine NC, warns that we are facing a serious problem with childhood obesity. An increase in childhood obesity is directly related to the prevalence of diabetes in children. Dr Schwarz recommends a 5 step strategy for all families to control and reverse this risk.

Dr Schwartz explains, We need to get off the couch, eat a healthier diet, dine out less frequently, watch our portion size, and turn off the TV. If we want our children to eat a healthy diet we must also eat a healthy diet and make sure that our homes contain mostly healthy choices. If we want our children to be physically active we must become physically active. If we want to prevent our children from becoming overweight we must make changes ourselves and be good role models for our children, our families, and our communities. Read more at Sixty Second Parent.

Schwartz goes on to say that one in three children born today will develop diabetes during their lifetime, and this is the first generation of children who will not outlive their parents.

As well as diabetes, complications from childhood obesity include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, low self esteem and depression. Schwartz hands the control of this epidemic over to the parents, and recommends that they understand and control the key factors that contribute to childhood obesity: sugar-sweetened drinks, dining out, decreased physical activity, and sedentary activity such as TV, video games and computer. By making this information available to the online parenting community at Sixty Second Parent, Schwartz and other experts in pediatrics and parenting are able to get their recommendations out to the parents directly, and parents get the chance to have their questions answered by these experts

So why is this increase in childhood obesity occurring? Weight maintenance depends on a balance between our energy intake (the calories we eat and drink each day) and energy expenditure (the calories we burn up with physical activity) explained Dr Schwartz. When we take in more calories in our diet or decrease our physical activity we get out of balance. The major factors related to increased energy intake include sugar-sweetened drinks, high calorie snacks, dining out at fast food and other restaurants, and large portion sizes for our food and drinks.

Is chest tightness and inability to exhale all the way at times symptoms of anxiety/panic?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

I notice I get this when I'm either really nervous or otherwise wrapped up in thoughtWas for me, even thought I was going to have a heart attack.I went to see a very good psychologist who told me if I didn't get that nonsense under control I could one day possibly have a heart attack for my symptoms were a sigh that my body was telling me TOO MUCH STRESSI got a hobby I enjoyed and stuck with it, I stopped holding in all my frustrations and let others have a good piece of my mind when they deserved and finally I just stopped caring. Unless it's life threatening situation or 90% for the most part out of my control Fudge It and that is using the polite term I do not mean or use.Life is too damn short for all that stress, anxiety and panic attacks more so when for the most part they are fairly easy to cure (providing one doesn't have a medical mental illness causing the attacks).
